Poetry

Speak Beliefs. I am more Miles than Mos, yet on most days, the blue notes in my mind are black on both sides. Bebop and Hip Hop combined. My Trane of Black Thought(s) are rooted in sentimental moods, on lazy afternoons. Read more of my work at Speaks Beliefs: Wordplay.

it grows like a sharp rat tooth
it cuts like broken glass
it cracks like aging pavement
it festers like gunshot wounds
it stinks like pissed on dandelions
and vanishes like hope

now is the time to be great
and there is no time to wait
time waits for no one
and time is lost for those who hesitate

RISE

for we’ve been down for far too long
only we can right these wrongs
its been a struggle, a beautiful struggle
let us sing of victory in our song

RISE

people of the world
from every corner of the globe
release all inhibitions
do not let your passion be controlled

RISE

from inner turmoil
negativity of the mind
use all focused energies
and refocus our fate that’s been assigned

RISE

because defeat is only for those
who accept being defeated
and our collective strength
has only been merely weakened

RISE

from the ashes and debris
and for the world to see
there is NO QUIT in US
him, her, you or me

RISE

RISE

from face first on the concrete

RISE

from bended knee

RISE

people of the world

RISE FOR AYITI

Innocent blood spilled

By a heartless gang of thugs

Wake up, Chicago!

We are the ones

We’ve been waiting

We’ve been through it all

We’ve been patient

We are African

We are Haitian

We’ve seen the Promised Land

We will make it

We were the ones

Before the Greeks

After we’ve seen the valleys

We’ve more than peaked

We are Brazilian

We are Jamaican

We’ve seen the Promised Land

We will make it

We still are the ones

We keep fighting

We’ve made progress

Though we’ve been slighted

We’re from continents

We’re from islands

They divided us

But now we’re united

We’ve shed blood

We’ve shed tears

We won’t give up

until we’ve made it clear

that We are the ones

We’ve been waiting

We’ve seen the Promised Land

and we will make it

fists of ebony raised and aimed at heaven

courageous act in the face of hate

our brethren

statement made

quiet display of rage

bold print written on history’s page

on this day

on world’s stage

at these games

without hesitation shining spotlight on ill nation

echoes of drum beasts, these brave athletes

triumphant moment, yet bittersweet

other brothers scattered in retreat

rebellion defeated? uprising ceased?

sacrifices and prices paid

upon returning to this racist place

america, they raced for her

only to return to closed doors and slurs

land of the free, home of the enslaved

paradoxical punishment

for hand and arm’s movement

as if they committed the greatest sin

but ah…you see…quite the contrary

the Creator smiled on these souls of meek

on men who shouted without speaking

strong calm

in the midst of revolutionary commotion

waves in the change of our people’s ocean

we salute you brave brothas

and so does Africa…our mother
